Miss Minor
Our 1992 recipient of The Ricks Institute Alumni Association, U.S.A., Inc. Award for "Outstanding Services" to Ricks Institute is considered by many as one of the strongest PILLARS in the history of the Institution. This award signifies the gratitude of our Asociation to Miss Hohnetta R. Minor for the fortitue, bravery, courage, and leadership of the School during the worst period of its existence.
Miss Minor was the fourth child born unto the union of Mr. John H. Minor and Mrs. Rebecca Wright-Minor in the township of Paynesville, Montserrado County , Republic of Liberia. She grew up in Marshall City, Liberia where she attended elementary and junior-high school.
Ricks Institute was the next stop on Miss Minor's road to education. In 1963, she became the first female graduate of Ricks Institute. She attended Cuttington University College and later returned to her Alma Mater and taught classes for five years. In 1971, our Honoree matriculated to San Francisco State University and received her BA and MA in English and Education.
In July of 1976, Miss Minor returned to Ricks Institute as Vice Principal for Instruction and also served as Language Arts teacher. Upon the establishment of the Ricks Institute Junior College, she became a professor in the English Department, and later, chairman of that department. Miss Minor accepted the position of Principal and President of Ricks Institute in 1980, thus becoming the first female to head the School. 1980 and the difficult years that follwoed brought great challenges to Miss Minor. With her srtong belief, the Almighty, and the endurance of a giant, this"Little Lady" withstood the bombardments of military shelling (that destroyed much of the campus), detention and brutal tortures during the recent civil war.
Miss Minor served as Vice President of the High School Teacher's Association and was a member of the West African Examination Council. She is a member of the Order of Eastern Stars and Sisters of the Mysterious Tent. Effort Baptist Church located in Paynesville, Liberia is the home church of Miss Minor, but her current membership is with Beth Eden Baptist Church, Oakland, California. She has travelled extensively throughout Liberia, Africa, Europe, and the United States.
